Water-filled bases cost less up front, set up in about fifteen minutes with a garden hose, and drain just as fast if the unit ever needs to move to a new apartment. Sand adds real weight in the same footprint, which matters for anyone throwing hard hooks and crosses, but a torn liner means shoveling wet sand off a garage floor instead of just draining a hose. Some bases split the difference, sand at the bottom for mass and water on top to fine-tune weight without hauling extra bags home. Whichever fill goes in, match it to how hard the bag actually gets hit: a casual home user doing pad-adjacent cardio rounds can run a lighter base fine, but anyone landing full-power crosses needs enough mass down low that the bag absorbs the shot instead of walking backward across the floor.
Height adjustment is the second real choice, and it gets skipped constantly. A fixed-height post works for one person and nobody else in the house. A telescoping post moves the strike zone up or down several inches, which matters more than people expect once a shorter partner or a kid wants a turn. Base diameter is worth checking against the actual room too, not just against the bag's listed weight capacity, since a wide base that clears a doorway frame by an inch is a problem nobody catches until moving day.

None of this replaces a bolted ceiling mount for someone training at genuine competition intensity, where a rigid hanging bag still returns more energy per shot and holds up better to daily full-power rounds; a standing base is built for consistency and convenience, not for absorbing a pro-level attack for years without maintenance. For most training at home, in a shared gym corner, or anywhere a beam isn't an option, boxing heavy bags with stands are the more practical call: choose one with an adjustable post if more than one person trains on it, prioritize a fully-filled sand-and-water base if power output is high, and check the base diameter against the room before anything else, because a stable setup starts on the floor, not on the bag.
Upkeep is minor but not zero. Water bases lose a little volume to evaporation over a hot summer and need topping off, and any plastic drum should get checked for hairline cracks near the base seam every few months, especially if it sits outside part of the year. A cheap gym mat underneath does double duty, it protects the actual floor from a dragging base and adds enough friction that a fully-filled unit barely shifts even under a hard right hand.
