Some trainers who work regularly with heavy hitters at the top of the weight range prefer 18 oz specifically for long mitt sessions. The protection logic is identical to sparring: more padding between the force source and the person absorbing it.
Hand speed is the real cost of 18 oz. Extra glove mass at the end of the arm takes more effort to accelerate and decelerate through combinations. Over the course of a hard sparring session, that translates to more shoulder and forearm fatigue than a 16 oz glove produces. Fighters who step up to 18 oz often notice the speed difference in the first few sessions before they adapt. For fighters below 190 lbs who are considering 18 oz for extra protection, the speed penalty is usually not worth it. The padding in 16 oz is proportionate to their punch force already.
Bag training in 18 oz is counterproductive for most people. Heavy bag work rewards speed, impact repetition, and wrist loading through proper mechanics. Extra glove mass at this weight adds momentum on each strike that the wrist has to manage on landing, increasing cumulative joint stress without corresponding benefit to the bag session. If the goal is conditioning on the bag, lighter gloves built for that purpose do the job better. Using 18 oz on the bag regularly, especially without the bag being designed for it, risks the wrist before the glove itself shows wear.
Some fighters use 18 oz deliberately for resistance training purposes during certain training blocks. The additional load forces the shoulder and rotator cuff to work harder through each combination, which some coaches incorporate for strength-building phases. This is a specific, intentional use with a defined endpoint, not a general recommendation. Fighters who do this typically return to lighter gloves for technical work and only use heavier gloves for structured conditioning rounds with that goal in mind.
Hand injury accommodation is another context where 18 oz shows up. Fighters managing chronic knuckle inflammation, recovering from a hand fracture, or dealing with joint issues sometimes use the extra padding as a buffer during controlled sparring while the injury heals. The padding compresses force on the knuckle side as well as the partner side. This should only happen under medical and coaching supervision. Using heavier gloves to train through an unmanaged hand injury risks the injury worsening in ways that are harder to diagnose when the source of force is being cushioned.
Skip 18 oz if you're under 190 lbs and in good health. The standard 16 oz handles your sparring protection without the speed and fatigue penalty. Skip it for bag work as a primary glove. And don't buy 18 oz because you train hard and want more protection generally: the protection increase only outweighs the drawbacks when your body mass and punch force are actually high enough to justify it. For most adult male fighters below 200 lbs, 18 oz is carrying extra weight without the protection payoff that weight is supposed to provide.
Maintenance follows the same rules as all sparring gloves, with the added factor that these gloves are absorbing harder impact per session than most. The foam compresses faster under heavier strike force. Air them out after every session. A glove dryer used consistently is not optional if you're in hard contact rounds regularly. When the knuckle padding stops rebounding after pressing firmly from the outside, the glove has run its protection cycle regardless of how it looks on the surface. At this weight, the cost of late replacement is absorbed by the sparring partner before it shows up in the glove.
