Absorbing combinations from a 250 lb fighter through mitt padding over a full training camp accumulates force in the trainer's hands and wrists differently than padwork with lighter athletes. Some trainers at the elite superheavyweight level use 20 oz specifically for long mitt sessions to reduce that accumulated impact. The logic is identical to the sparring case: more foam between the force source and the person receiving it. This applies when the athlete's force output is genuinely at the high end of the weight range, not as a general precaution for all coaches.
Hand speed is the primary cost. Extra mass at the end of the arm demands more effort to accelerate and decelerate through combinations. Over the course of hard sparring rounds, that translates to earlier shoulder fatigue and slower hand return between punches. Fighters stepping up from 18 oz to 20 oz often feel the difference within the first few sessions before adaptation sets in. For any fighter below 230 lbs considering 20 oz for additional protection, the speed and fatigue penalty is rarely worth the marginal padding increase over what 18 oz already provides at that weight.
Bag work is the wrong use for 20 oz. Heavy bag training rewards speed, precise wrist mechanics, and impact repetition. The added mass at this weight increases momentum on each strike that the wrist must manage at the point of contact, compounding joint stress across a session without a corresponding benefit to conditioning or technique. Bag-specific gloves at lower weights do the job better and protect the wrist over the long term. Using 20 oz on the bag consistently risks the wrist before technique or conditioning goals are reached.
Genuine leather is not optional at this weight. The use context — elite superheavyweight sparring or extended padwork at the highest force range — means these gloves absorb more impact per session than any lighter pair. Synthetic materials compress and degrade faster under that load, losing protective function before they show visible wear. The cost difference between genuine leather and synthetic at 20 oz pays back in durability within the first year of regular use. Trainers using 20 oz for mitt work should evaluate whether the force from their athlete actually justifies it. If the athlete is not a superheavyweight generating genuine high-end force, the trainer is absorbing extra glove weight without a proportionate force reduction benefit. Padwork mechanics depend partly on glove weight, and a heavier glove at this size affects the trainer's hand positioning and reaction speed in ways that can affect the quality of the session as much as they affect protection.
Maintain these gloves with the same discipline required of any sparring glove, with the added factor that the foam is absorbing heavier impact per session and compresses faster under that load. Air them out after every session. A glove dryer used consistently is not optional if elite sparring is the use case. When the knuckle foam stops rebounding after firm external pressure, the protection cycle is over regardless of external condition. At this weight, the cost of late replacement is absorbed by the sparring partner before it shows up in the glove itself.
